For many states, time is running out...
Statewide/State Issued franchising in ten states either completely eliminated PEG support funding or set a shot clock on when PEG support funding would end.
The following states had their PEG support funding eliminated:
Kansas
South Carolina
Nevada
New Jersey (New Jersey does require system-wide franchise holders to provide equipment and training)
The following states have seen or will see PEG funding eliminated, triggered by a certain date or when a local franchise expires:
Florida (until expiration or 2012, whichever is earlier)
Georgia (until expiration or 2012, whichever is later)
Iowa (until existing franchise expires)
Missouri (until expiration, termination or 2012, whichever is earlier)
Ohio (until expiration, termination or 2012 whichever is earlier)
Wisconsin (2011)
In California, Illinois and Indiana, cable operators that were operating PEG channels closed the access center doors, sometimes with only 30 days notice.
And even in states where PEG funding remained, channels have been slammed into digital siberia or are subject to reclamation by the cable operators if they don't meet certain programming criteria.
The clock is ticking, we haven't a minute to lose.
